Throughout New Jersey and Delaware, Allies staff members are working tirelessly to serve those we support.
Each month, Allies recognizes one person who has been nominated by their supervisor and/or colleagues. Please join us in recognizing the folks who make the amazing work we do possible.
This month, we are recognizing Joanie Dalessandro, Behavior Specialist!
How long have you been with Allies?
August 12 will make 2 years of working with Allies.
Why did you choose to pursue a career in this field?
I have a passion for working with individuals with special needs. I actually started volunteering when I was 17 at a park with individuals with special needs.
What is your favorite part of your role?
My favorite part of the whole is helping to provide my individuals with strategies that can improve their quality of life.
Where do you look for, or find, inspiration?
I find inspiration when my individuals achieve growth and reach their goals. It means a lot to see individuals I work with achieve new heights in communication and emotional self-regulation. I make a lot of visuals which helps our folks to communicate in new ways.
Is there anyone, who is part of the organization that you look up to? Why?
I look to Dr. Walker and Dawn King. I really appreciate their support and mentorship.
How do you think your role has helped to shape the lives of those you serve?
Since working at Allies, I have taught individuals to improve their ADLs and their functional communication and have helped other individuals learn to self regulate. This helps those I work with to have more balanced emotions and outlooks on their lives. I also do cooking and art therapy with our individuals. I have a teaching background, so I love to get creative in the ways I am connecting with those I support.
Can you tell me about a professional experience or accomplishment you are proud of? (Staff, individual, both)
When I worked at Green Street, I was able to support an individual to help them make more independent decisions and make their own choices. They are now able to make their own choices and decisions without getting as frustrated.
Please describe one of your fondest memories working with Allies. (Staff, individual, both)
When I worked at Green Street, we would do crafts with the staff and individuals. Everyone would try to top each other and we had a really nice time. It is always great when staff and individuals are able to connect and have fun over a craft like that.
Do you have any hidden talents?
I am an empathetic listener, detail-oriented, and I am great with non-verbal communication. I have about 30 years of experience, but I am not done learning. I learn something new every day, from the individuals I work with as well as the other staff members.
If you could choose any superpower, which would you pick?
Unblocking. This is a psychological term which would allow me to help my individuals to self-regulate and help them get through their current struggles.
Do you have anything else you would like to share? Anyone you would like to shout-out?
I really enjoy working with the behavioral team, and my shout-out would be the entire clinical team.
