Spring has arrived all throughout New Jersey, and Allies is getting in the spring spirit by hosting a walking contest to encourage healthy habits and active lifestyles.
The arrival of warmer temperatures has just about everyone at Allies itching to get out and enjoy some of the sunshine. To make the most of the warm weather, Allies is holding a walking contest for people receiving residential services through Allies. In addition, the entire administrative staff was also invited to take part in the challenge.
Before the contest kicked off on March 1, step-counters were delivered to every person at Allies who wanted to participate. At the end of each week, everyone who is participating submits their total step count. At the end of each month, the winning walkers will receive two movie tickets. The contest will run for at least 3 months, when the winning team and individual will receive a bigger prize.
“We are really hoping to encourage everyone at Allies to work more movement and activity into their daily lives,” Loretta Rarrick, director of community outreach at Allies, said. “With the warm weather, this is the best time of year to get out and walking!”
“An exercise program has numerous benefits for everyone, including those with intellectual and developmental disabilities,” Stephen J. Kolesk, MD, chief of family medicine at the Medical Center at Woods. “Exercise can improve muscle strength, coordination, and studies have shown that it improves cognitive function!”
“Walking is simply good for you: It’s easily done and it’s a great way to get exercise, enjoy the outdoors, and connect with other people.”
“Walking can help individuals with I/DD maintain a healthy weight and reduce their risk of obesity,” Dawn King, VP of integrated healthcare at Allies, said. “Increasing physical activities contributes to stronger bones and muscles, which can be particularly important for individuals with I/DD who may be at higher risk of osteoporosis or muscle weakness.”
King added, “Getting out for a walk and breathing fresh air and getting sunlight can increase vitamin D which can help us to feel grounded and relaxed “It can help improve mood, reduce stress, and enhance overall mental well-being.”
We encourage everyone to take advantage of the spring weather and get those steps in!
